What Is Now Is Right or Best

Excerpts from the Tamborine Talk June 1989

‘What is, is best.’ This is from an old Eastern tradition. And it’s not easy to accept, is it? It means that just as things are is the best way for them to be …

'What is, is best’ is a way of describing being one with the Divine Will, which is what is happening now. If what is happening now is not the Divine Will, that would suggest some other Will is possible. Impossible: the Divine Will must be almighty. So what is now is right or best …

The Divine Will - the 'what is’ part of life - teaches us to adapt, to be able to change; because life is change, isn’t it? Someone is going to die tomorrow or the next day. Are you going to be able to cope with it? Are you going to be able to say, 'What is, is best. How do I handle this?’ That would be the intelligent way of doing things, wouldn’t it? 'What is, is best’ is the state of things. You can’t change it. But can you cope with it? That’s the question … Life consists of constantly confronting changing events. The divine life consists of detaching from the past that is being changed now. That is how to attend to your life.

'What is, is best’ as long as I am detached from what was and can face the new, which is what is now.
