Your Fountain
Extract from the Tamborine Talk January 1989.
Feel the sensation of your body, the feeling inside that informs you you’re alive; the place where you feel hunger or pleasure or longing. Have you got it? Feel the whole sensation, like you’d look into the bedroom mirror and see the whole of your body, not just a particular part.
Inside that sensation are all your different feelings. They’re just under the surface - anger, resentment, guilt and all the different negative emotions. They rise up there like different jets in a fountain, don’t they?
The fountain is the whole living sensation. Do you feel it moving, tingling, pitter-pattering in there? When one individual jet - a negative emotion like anger, for instance - spurts up and takes over the whole fountain, you lose yourself. You lose the whole. But if you can stay with the whole, the part can’t take you over.
Here’s the secret: Negativity is only negative when you allow the brain to divide this whole living feeling of yourself; when you allow it to fragment you into guilt, or anger, or frustration. In those moments, hold on to the whole … Feel it now. Be aware of it now. The whole sensation. It is the good, the right, the true.
