Action Purifies
Edited extract from a talk at the Master Session 2000, afternoon of 5 November.
The only way to live your life is to live it until it’s finished and not to live it in fear - because fear is a restriction of freedom. Your intelligence gets cramped by fear.
So I say: What do you want to do? What are you moved to do? Well, go and do it. Go and do what you’re moved to do, but for goodness sake, stop thinking about it.
‘I’d like to do that. I’d like to do this. I wish I had this. I wish I had that.’ - That’s the self. And the best way to get rid of that self, and what it’s thinking about, is to go and do it. For action purifies.
Of course, you’ve got to take the consequences. There are always consequences for everything we do. And that’s why we’re afraid, isn’t it? We’re frightened of what might happen. We are constrained in some way or other by our fear. But I say, if you think about doing something, if you think about leaving your partner, then you’d better have a close look at it and either shut up or leave. How about that? Have the guts to leave or shut up. Stop playing table tennis with your self.
