The Child’s Imagination
An extract from Raising Children in Love, Justice and Truth.
The child’s desire is to escape the confined life of being in the body in a hostile world. The world of the child’s imagination offers escape. But that same psychic space is a future world of fear, worry and self-projection. So I question the popular idea that it is important to encourage a child’s imagination. I know there are theories about the importance of imagination to children. But I have to ask: If it is true that the child’s imagination is the source of future worry and fear, is it good to encourage it? Everyone gets unhappy, including all the child psychologists and theorists. So perhaps they’re just promoting more unhappiness.
The value placed on imaginative thinking in the education of children is another example. I am suggesting an alternative way of looking at it that allows you in the moment to be less imaginative and more creative.
Look creatively at these questions for yourself. I tell you I do not have to think or imagine anything, that I simply look and see straight. Will you now look inside yourself and see if that is indeed a desirable state? And if so, what are we teaching our children?
Asking questions of ourselves - that’s the beginning of raising a child in consciousness.
