Contain Your Self

From a talk on 29 July 2002 in Coolangatta, Australia.

Do what you’ve got to do … But what about all the unnecessary things you amuse yourself with? That’s where you waste not just your time but a precious power you have inside you. You expend your power as energy. Energy should be contained so that you have the power in you.

What power? The power to not have to worry - to not be anxiously concerned about anything anymore. The power to just have everything come to you that you need, without you having to expend any effort you’re not moved to expend.

We’re talking about intelligence … Do you think it’s just there so that you can write a book or earn a million dollars? What’s intelligence supposed to do on earth? It’s supposed to make your life effortless. My living is effortless.

It’s effortless for you to sit there - unless you have wanting and wishing and hoping and praying and all the rest of that stuff down in your guts, which gets up to your chest, where you find it hard to breathe, and then gets into your head. You think you’ve got trouble with thinking in your head but it all comes from down in your guts, where you store your self.

All your disappointments, all your unhappiness, your broken love affairs, your sexual frustration, it’s all down in your stomach. That’s where it lives and it’s called your self. That’s what rises up and gets into the brain. You allow it to get into the brain instead of containing it.

Do you know what containment means? It means you put the stopper back in the bottle. The bottle’s down there, in the belly. All the self, all the shit in the world, is down there in the shit department. You’ve got to put the stopper in the bottle.

Containment means: ‘I do not think about my self’. You have to stop thinking about your problem. You have to stop thinking about your self.
