The Attachment to Myself

From the Tamborine Talk August 1990

I must not be attached to what I do.

I must also not be attached to what I don’t do. When you are attached to what you don’t do, you feel guilty - because you didn’t do something; because you weren’t kind; because, on looking back, you think you should have done better. That is being attached to what I didn’t do.

Next, I must not be attached to what I am. For instance, I am a body … And every body dies. If I’m attached to my body, I’ll be afraid of death. And that will make me afraid throughout my life and prevent me from being honest.

Next, I must not be attached to what people say I am. For then I will suffer, since people do not always speak highly of me or justly. It is because I am attached to what people say or think that I suffer or have doubts about myself.
