Chilkapita
Chilkapita, near Almora, India: Barry Long stayed here for six months in 1965. It was where he wrote what was later published as 'Meditation: A Foundation Course' and 'Knowing Yourself'. And where 'after three days of astonishing confusion and uncertainty’ he realised immortality. What this means is described in detail in his autobiography. He also speaks about it in the film, 'Scenes From an Enlightened Life’.
'Chilkapita is the name of the large bungalow … It means 'high-flying birds’ and is about two miles from Almora village. The bungalow is isolated, with terraced gardens and vegetable plots cut into the side of the hill. An Indian yogi saint is said to have lived in one of the outhouses for several years. Chilkapita is a beautiful spot but it can only be reached through pines by rough and rocky paths that drop 300 feet in less than a mile.’
