The Moment of Decision

From the Gold Coast Talk 31 July 1993

Always go by the practical. Don’t fight against it. The practical is the unfoldment of what is necessary. Watch for the practical. Either you can do something or you can’t. If you can’t, don’t think about it, don’t wish, don’t want, don’t pray for it. Let it go until you can look again and see, ‘Yes, now I can do it.’ Then do it.

You will find that you follow the practical when you can’t do anything else and you’re not attached to what you want to do. Finally the practical is the determining factor for you, the only factor that is necessary.

Avoid making decisions, as much as possible. There are times when you are coming up towards a decision - a moment, a point where two converging lines cross. That’s the future coming. If you try to make a decision from a moment that’s three or four days away, or even an hour away, you’re likely to get confused, because the point hasn’t been crossed. When it is, something will happen. A decision will be made, or won’t be made, or will be made for you. If I have to make a decision, I make it in the moment, on the biggest ‘yes’.

Often people worry about their jobs, about what to do, and they exercise themselves greatly trying to get advice. Don’t indulge yourself in shopping around for unnecessary advice. Get what practical advice you can but when that’s sufficient, and you still can’t make a decision about what to do, sit back and enjoy your life. Wait. A part of you will be vigilant to see if the situation has changed; to see if you’ve got some more facts. The knowledge of what is best will happen without any decision. As the moment comes, you will find that your body does this or that.

Decisions are the other side of choice. While you have choice, you’re going to be confused and likely to be unhappy. When you have no choice … Ah, what a relief! My life is about giving up my choice. Then I am free.
