The Perfect Body

A transcript of a talk by Barry Long…

The perfect body is inside you and inside me, inside everybody. It is potential. It is in existence that the perfect body which is inside of you in the psyche is made more and more perfect by living in existence. You’ll notice I haven’t used the word “your perfect body” or “my perfect body” because that would be to make it personal. It is not personal. But it is, as far as you and I are concerned, individual inasmuch as it is made more and more perfect by yours and my actions, attitudes – our whole living process here in existence.

It starts off–the perfect body–as potential. And each life that is lived here lights up some of the perfect body by the actions taken here according to what is right and true. But it is not personal. It is the perfect body that has given rise to the false idea of reincarnation. It has been intuited before, of course, to give rise to that. I am not suggesting that you will ever be born again. It is very difficult to communicate something that is not personal in this very personal world because we are all persons here – that means we all have a centre that begins with our body, and then we make everything personal. All our emotions are a result of things being personal. All our feelings come from being personal. It is only when we start to give up being personal about living that we begin to realise more and more the perfect body inside us.

So you have inside of you a potential perfect body. Now the potential of that body is the potential of God, of being God. Now we don’t know what God is, only God is perfect, and we don’t know what perfect is, so we have no idea what the potential of perfection is. But we know what is right, what is good, and what is true. We do have an understanding of self-indulgence – we know what is not right, what is not good, and what is not true – we have this knowledge in us. Although some of that is due to conditioning and following religious dogmas, there is a fundamental knowledge of what is not good and what is good.

For instance, it is not good to necessarily hurt another – it is not good. But you can’t make a distinction with your mind about what is not good in hurting another. Because obviously, the surgeon who removes something from your body has to hurt your body, but he is not hurting you – is he? He is just doing something you have agreed to, to take the pain and be hurt.

So we have to be very careful about what it is to be hurt, to hurt or not hurt someone. But you’ll be guided from within, not by your conscience – although the conscience is the lower conditioning that guides us in the beginning – I am not talking of conscience. There comes a way of living where I do not wish to harm you in any way whatever. I do not wish to harm you.

But at the same time, if you come to me and I happen to be a spiritual master, then I will be ruthless with you and your emotions. You could say, ‘how could you say that you are a loving man with what you are doing to me?’ Now those sort of things, the master in his love, or anyone in their love – I am talking about masters who distinguish between divine love and not human love – the master’s love is very cold, it is not like human love.

Human love likes being warm, likes being comforted, likes sympathy. The master’s love says, ‘stop that sentimentality,’ ‘stop that sympathising with someone whose lover has just died–’ because that’s human love to sympathise with someone whose lover or a loved one has died. You don’t sympathise with someone if you are true. You can just say, ‘I am with you, and I understand your sadness, but there is no need to be sad because there’s no death.’ But you can only say that if you know, there is no death – can you? And you can help them in any way if you possibly can. But you can’t put up with emotional sentimentality, hoping, or wishing. Well, you can if you can, but I can’t. Because that’s not love.

Love is to make you strong. My love is to make you strong, not consider your person, and not to consider your human feelings. My love is to make you strong.

I am only saying that to demonstrate that there is a great difference between human love and true love, real love. Real love does not consider yourself, and at the same time does not consider anybody, and at the same time is civil, is helpful. Its motivation is not to hurt anyone or anything, but at the same time to do what must be done. That's a state of balance and equilibrium.

Not swinging into 'I am sorry about that,' or 'I am excited about that,' or 'I love that,' or 'I don't love that.' That is the human see-saw that goes on in everyone. Equilibrium is at the centre of the see-saw, the pivot – the pivotal point of balance. That's where divine love or real love begins. Neither excited and never depressed, nor never excited and depressed. That's balance, that's equilibrium.

To reach equilibrium, the potential perfect body inside the body has to have been lighted up. That means – to demonstrate it the best that I can in a rational and conceptual way in which we have to speak because I can't just say it as it is just like that, so I've got to do it bit by bit – is that it has to be lit up. I can't say this body is the same shape as our body; I am using the word 'body,' but it consists of every time that you or I do something good or true or right – not according to our conscience but according to a greater judgement than that – a little of the perfect body, the potential perfect body is made positive or real, it lights up.

This perfect body is not there just in your birth, since you were born or I was born – it is there all the time, behind the whole of existence and everybody who exists. But you have to contribute to it like I have to, and you are never born again.

What happens is that this perfect body which is imperfect at this time, or relatively perfect if you can use that expression, is consciousness – that thing beyond even life. Consciousness determines the birth of everything in existence, it's timing, and when it happens – consciousness does that. There is no person in consciousness; there is no knowing in consciousness. As stated, there is no one to know that you've had a previous life. There is only previous life. That is the previous life of everyone on earth, and the various individual lives that have taken place – there is only that – there is not your previous life at all. That is an illusion.

So the consciousness of the perfect body focuses on the existence – because it is out of existence, it is in the pure psyche – and it focuses into existence and somewhere or other by a system that is probably best described in my ‘Origins of Man and Universe’, it focuses into existence and creates a newborn baby. That newborn does not have a person. It has what is called predispositions. Are you with me?

Every baby, everything that is born, has predispositions. That is that one baby is not the same as the other. A twin baby is not the same baby as its twin. They all have different dispositions, somehow or other. This predisposition comes from the consciousness that formed the baby's body, or that formed the baby – it didn't matter when it was formed, at the moment of conception or whatever, that's all conceptual, physical stuff. At the moment of a baby's say conception, the predisposition is already focused there, and that comes from the perfect body.

As I spoke to you yesterday that there is positivity in the child because the child has got the negation – the negation of the truth – there is a positive truth that determines the whole of existence from there on. What varies and doesn't make it a fatal – what's the word – fatalism, that it's been intuited, 'ah well it has all been predetermined–' and that is true by this positive thing in the baby's body that is going to determine all its events and circumstances.

It is not fatalism in the sense of fatalism because to the degree that the living life of the baby – which is you – lights you some of the perfect body within so it changes the circumstances of the life, and those things that were fixed don't necessarily happen. I've described it somewhere in my tapes or books that what would have been a bullet coming through the windscreen of your car into your face and injuring you very badly turns into a hailstone or a stone that shatters the windscreen or just a heavy raindrop that is wiped off by the wipers. In that way, do you change the predetermined circumstances of your life, and you don't have to worry about how to change them. All you do is just do what you do and live what turns out to be the golden rule – do not hurt others more than has to be done.

Now you can't tell that to a soldier who's going to war – you can tell him that if you're a conscientious objector, you can tell him that, of course, you can do anything that you are moved to do, you can be a conscientious objector, and you can protest about the wars. But someone is going to have to be sent by the governments, by the greatest force – the government – to fight. And the fighting man has got a gun. It's not guns that kill people – it's people that kill people. The soldier has got to do what he's got to do. He's got to kill people or be killed. Now you can't use your judgement of him. You can't say that he is wrong because that is you putting your beliefs and what you think onto another, and you can't do that. For the day might come when you might have to kill somebody, and you'll be like the Christian who says, 'I'd never kill anybody–' I'd be very careful if anyone said that – because you do not know what you have to do.

You might have to kill someone one day. You never know how it might be done. In an accident – is there anything such as an 'accident?' In an accident, in defending yourself – in any way at all, you might have to kill someone, but the thing is to be inside so that you don't wish to harm anyone any more than it happens. One of the ways not to do that is to give up anger. Because if you're angry, if you're really really gripped with anger, then it is not quite distant to get to a place where anger kills or wounds or hurts. Or, if you're frustrated, if you're sexually frustrated, where all the sex crimes come from – the sexually frustrated men. I'm not saying that women don't get it too and are not just as cruel behind doors or wherever it is. But man's the one that seems to stalk and rape out of his sexual frustration because he never really came and listens to me or any master of love – he couldn't come, could he? Because he was born with a fatalism that determined all the actions he was going to take had to happen unless he changed within so that he could change his external circumstances. To change within is to light up the perfect body's potential.

Now the perfect body will never ever be lit right up, as far as I can see. But I can see that it is lit more and more and more by the life here, and you are responsible for the perfect body – you – not the person next to you. You cannot judge the person next to you that they are not being right and true; you cannot judge them. They've got to do what they've got to do, no matter what it is. You can endeavour to advise them if you are moved to, or if they ask you. But you cannot judge them because you will have to be judged one day. It is best that you are not judged except by something greater than what you are here.

Now the perfect body in everyone is lit up more or less, these little lights, these tiny little lights that light up, the cluster of them varies in everybody. Yet it is still not personal. We can't use our rational minds; our rational minds work off the division. They work off contrast, they work off distinctions – 'that's red, that's pink, and that's orange' – that's the rational mind that's interpreting a certain vibration that comes up, and it interprets it. It works off division, off variety – 'that lady is blonde, that lady is brunette, that lady is something else, that man is this, and that man is that,' 'I like this and I don't like that–' this is the rational mind. This is the operation of the rational mind and the division that we are; we are divided people. We are divided by way of things.

The whole idea of the spiritual life is to eliminate the superficial division in us because the division is superficial. Emotion is superficial. Emotion is division. There is love, and there is emotion. Now – do you need to have the two of them? Because then that is division, that is a distinction. There's love, and there's emotion – anger is an emotion, and there's love. So, there we have it.

That was always the appeal of the myth, the myth of Jesus. That at least he spoke about love. And so, the myth of Jesus is much easier to worship or love than the idea of the sweet, beautiful, and true. Whoever was the man who wrote what he wrote or said what he said had indeed very lovely things to say. But then what we are we – we are such hypocritical people – we will say, 'is what he said not lovely?' And then we'll get angry with someone the next day. That's how hypocritical we are. We will go for someone who speaks of love and truth and then, at the same time, do the exact opposite. That does not light up the perfect body.

Now the perfect body is not extinguished; no light in the perfect body is extinguished by any bad action. That's because there are no bad actions. Is that not amazing? – that there are no bad actions. It is lit up, though, by what is good and right and true. The bad actions are what have been determined by the human race.

What I am talking about is that you are a cell – me too – we are a cell in the human race, the body of humanity. Now we all like to think that we are individuals. And that has a certain truth in it, and I'll be talking about that later. But we are 'personal individuals' – that's what they call an oxymoron, really. It's a contradiction; you can't have a 'personal' individual. But we are all personal individuals.

Everyone is striving to be the individual, personally. You can't have it. Because the perfect body consists of individual consciousness. Your real consciousness, the consciousness of everyone here, is in the perfect body as individual consciousness – not as an individual – but as individual consciousness. But it's not personal. We can't help but make everything personal, even what I'm talking about.

I do trust you are not getting bored. Somebody has got to tell you the truth. There's no good getting bored or restless just because I have to jump here and there. I am talking about what you are. I am talking about your life. I am talking of truth. I am talking about something nobody else on earth has spoken about in such detail. It has been intuited before, but nobody could explain it as I can. So, please listen. All you've got to do is listen. You don't have to think about it. If you think about it, you'll get it wrong. You have to get the idea. If you think about it, you'll be thinking in concepts with your rational mind – with your rational, scientific mind – a dreadful thing regarding truth and love. You've got to get the idea. I will make it all clear to you, and you can ask your questions after.

I am talking about the impersonal to the personal. Almost an impossibility today to do. But you can get the idea. Because you are not personal at your depths. You are consciousness, just like you are life. Now, you can't name what life is. But you can't deny that you are life. Consciousness is even beyond life. So you've got no chance of knowing what the consciousness is; you can only get the idea as I speak to you from that place.

There is individual consciousness. But that individual consciousness in that perfect body that you help by your life, by the good in your life, the true in your life, the rightness in your life. We can't be too judgemental about what all those things are because we might mix it up with our conditioning. But you know what is good. It is good to serve. It is good to serve those who are suffering or those who are incapable. It is good to serve the sick – if you are moved to – only if you're moved to. It's no good serving the sick just because you think it's good.

Suppose you're moved to serve the sick. In that case, it is good to serve the sick because then you have to give up yourself for a time. You have to be compassionate, which is a very beautiful thing, to help someone who is incapacitated or sick, as you know very well from your own experience what it is like if you've ever been bed-ridden and sick. Someone comes and does something for you like the nurses do – the most beautiful thing in the hospital is the nurses that come and help you – and you say 'thank God!'

I’m talking about goodness. Goodness is to help another, to serve another because you’re moved to because you can’t help it. That’s what goodness is. Just so we don’t get it mixed up. Nothing is more beautiful than helping someone in the human race who is suffering. Because humanity, the people, are God.

So your individual consciousness, which through every action – every action which is not being watched but being recorded by consciousness – deep down beyond life in the psyche, every action is recorded. And those actions that are true or right or good light up a little bit of the perfect body of humanity of which you are a cell as I am.

But, you are an individual consciousness now. And that individual consciousness is in the perfect body. Your perfect body for you to be here has been lit. You’ve put some lights in the perfect body for you to be here. And that does not mean that everybody has to be here, or with any spiritual teacher, or with any religion, to be good. That’s not true. Many, many good people have not heard of a spiritual teacher, people who have eschewed religions but are good in the sense I am talking about. So we are not holier than them. It just seems that we have the knowledge of what we are doing, which also contributes to the perfect body.

So the individual consciousness that you are now is contributing to lighting the perfect body by your actions that are good and right and true – by the way, you serve, by the way, you help, by the way, you get rid of your emotions and destructive tendencies which we all have within to start with. The extraordinary thing is that when you die, that individual consciousness, that vital life, goes back into the reservoir of life. Out of that is extracted the consciousness that goes again into the perfect body of humanity. Something special is extracted at that time that lights it up a little more.

And that then great consciousness that of course, is God shines down in some way or another as you’d read in the Origins book into existence and brings into existence another baby which is certainly not you but has some of that consciousness that you have in it, that you have contributed, and at the same time that little baby has to pick up some of the destructive emotions that the dead have left behind.

There are two actions that go on in death. One is all the destructive emotions, all the ignorance, all the sexual aberrations, the sexual hate and the sexual frustrations, all the stuff that motivates cruelty within the human race, which is all sexual, is left behind in the body but in the psyche, it is left there, in the psychic realm that I speak about, which is made by man and woman.

The baby has to pick up some of the stuff that people leave behind, some of the negativity the baby has to pick up so that it can be made pure. And, at the same time, the baby has the consciousness that you and I have put in there, into the perfect body; the baby has some of that too, that of course, is the consciousness of life.

So there are the two things that are in the baby. It has its predispositions towards a love of God or love of something or a love of life or love of truth, a predisposition towards decency or rightness or whatever it’s called, and it also has the destructive emotions that are left behind by the dead who never really understood what it is to die for the human race by giving up all your destructive emotion. You can see the great accumulation of that when very little of the world has any knowledge of how to die. Because they are all very emotional up until they are dying. And then, as they pass into death, they start to leave behind all those terrible, destructive sexual frustrations and all the rest of it. They start to leave that behind in the psyche.

As someone said yesterday, when someone dies, they had a beautiful look on their face afterwards. Well - of course - all the sexual frustration and drive for power over other people instead of yourself has left the body; it’s gone into the psyche, so there’s a great relief on the body. The body could be twisted by its own hate or sexual aberrations. That’s not to say that normally people are sexually aberrant; I am saying that. What man and woman do together – I am not talking about that sort of sexual aberration.

So, I am endeavouring to communicate about the perfect body. You are lighting it up, but you are not going to get anything out of it whatsoever, except when you die, you will go to a level of the psyche which is equivalent to your consciousness. So I’ll come onto that now, all right.

You will go if you are someone who, say you are an ordinary good person, and there are many out there who do their best, and yet still have emotions and thoughts and all sorts of things in them – if you are one of those people – then you are going to go into a sort of a dream. This, in a way, is a dream; it’s not our dream – this existence – it’s not our dream, but something is dreaming. You’ll often hear of the masters of awakening. It’s not a real awakening. But it’s starting to come to lose identification with this existence, just starting to.

Something dreams here, and the dream only ends when your body dies. So it’s no good saying that anyone is fully conscious here. I won’t say that anyone here is fully conscious despite the great claims that are made; it’s not true. You can be more conscious than you were, but you can’t be fully conscious until you are dead. That’s what death exists for.

At death, everybody goes into a place which resonates – now resonates, here you have a vibration here, everything in existence is vibrating, the floor is vibrating, your body is vibrating, my body is vibrating, your psychic system within is vibrating, everything is vibrating to be in existence. When there is sufficient lighting in the individual consciousness in the perfect body, you get what is called resonance.

Resonance means a ‘re-soundness – a ‘re-sonance.’ So from this vibration, then a sense goes into the psyche of what you are and either does or does not resonate with the perfect body inside of you. Then you get resonance. Resonance is stronger than the vibration. The resonance comes back and quells vibration to some degrees, making it like itself because resonance coming off the prefect body is far stronger than material vibration, which we all are. And, so, a change happens within here because of resonance.

Each of you here more or less resonates here with my consciousness to be here, or when you go to another master, you resonate with that master, or you vibrate with that master. Then when you are finish vibrating, you go somewhere where you can get some more eventually – when you’ve vibrated enough there, when you’ve got enough there. You’re also living your life, and there’s more chance of resonance. Then you move on to another master who is more resonant than the vibrational master or teacher. You see, it’s a vast thing; it’s extraordinary.
